Enable MODI

Included in the kit is a MODI sensor. The MODI sensor is a distance sensor that measures the distance between the sensor and an object in front of it. This is an important component of the Mantis Scout, as it allows the robot to detect and navigate around obstacles in its path.

When you first connect this sensor, you will need to enable it. This step only needs to occur once. To enable the MODI sensor, you will need to press the S key to set up the MODI. Once enabled, the Mantis Scout will not boot properly if the MODI sensor is not connected once enabled.

After pressing the S key, the program will send the commands to enable the sensor and disconnect the device. Once you reconnect, the MODI will start processing and return distance values to the program as expected. Please note that you only need to run the distance command once.

In addition to the MODI sensor, the Mantis Scout robotics kit includes other components such as motors, wheels, and a chassis that you can use to build and customize your robot. By combining the different components and programming your robot using Scratch, you can create a robot that can move, sense, and interact with the world around it.

If you decide to remove your Modi sensor, update your code and change the Drop down from SCT turn Modi โ€œoff.โ€ This will allow the Scout to work without a MODI present.

Overall, the Mantis Scout robotics kit is an excellent tool for learning about robotics, programming, and engineering. By exploring the capabilities of the MODI sensor and other components, you can gain a better understanding of how robots work and how they can be used to solve real-world problems.

Reading Distance Values

Upon successful connection, distance is reported back to the screen. Notice the Modi Shield block shows nonzero values when an obstacle is detected.
